Brewer and winemaker Foster's Group Ltd says the managing director of its CUB business unit, Alex Stevens, has resigned due to ill health.

"Whilst we are very sorry about this unexpected development, we respect and support this decision and sincerely wish him well for the future," Foster's chief executive Ian Johnston said in a statement on Tuesday.

Mr Johnston said much had been achieved at CUB during Mr Stevens's leadership, including separating the beer, cider and spirits sales team from the wine and changing the name, Mr Johnston said.

The division is the former Carlton & United Breweries.

Mr Johnston will act as CUB managing director until further notice, Melbourne-based Foster's said.
