'Road rage' man knocks woman unconscious

September 4, 2009

A man has been charged with knocking a woman unconscious in a road rage incident in Melbourne early on Friday.

A 21-year-old woman and her boyfriend were on their way home when they stopped at an intersection and became involved in an argument with another motorist, a 22-year-old man travelling alone, say police.

The incident occurred on Dandenong Road in Malvern East, in Melbourne's south-east, about 1am (AEST).

The lone motorist allegedly stepped out of his car, jumped on the victim's car bonnet and kicked a hole in the windscreen.

Police believe the victim, a 21-year-old Notting Hill woman and her partner then approached the man who then pushed the woman to the ground, causing her to hit her head on a concrete man-hole cover and lose consciousness.

Ambulance Victoria paramedic Dustin Curtis said the woman was taken to The Alfred hospital in a stable condition.

"She was quite dazed and may have been briefly unconscious and had trouble recalling what happened before paramedics arrived," he told reporters.

Police charged a Keilor Downs man over the incident with recklessly causing serious injury.

He was bailed to appear in court in November.
