Wodonga fire station forced shut

October 2, 2009

The city of Wodonga in northern Victoria will be without a firecrew on Saturday because of a chronic shortage of staff.

United Firefighters Union (UFU) national secretary Peter Marshall says professional firefighters at Wodonga have been working excessive overtime and, coupled with the shortage of staff, there was no one available to work on Saturday.

"It leaves Wodonga very exposed," Mr Marshall told AAP.

"The CFA (Country Fire Authority) has tried to cover an increasing number of calls and a greater area with the same number of staff.

"This has been going on for six to seven months."

He said there were also concerns that the Craigieburn CFA station in northern Melbourne would be shut on Saturday for the same reasons.

A CFA spokesman told AAP that the Wodonga station would be manned by its volunteer crew on Saturday.

"They are as professionally trained as the career firemen at the station," Anthony Spargo said.

"If there is an emergency there they are ready to go."
