Australia enjoyed a strong opening day at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF) with Victoria's Anthony Drmic leading the boys' basketball side to a 83-30 demolition of New Zealand.
The host country also racked up wins in women's basketball and women's hockey before the opening ceremony in Sydney.
Australia's under-18 men's side dominated the Kiwis with the younger brother of former NBL forward Frank Drmic leading the scoring with 19 points in just 26 minutes on Wednesday.
"We've got depth, we can throw people into the game," Australia coach Paul Goriss told reporters.
"It gives confidence to the guys to have the top guys go in and do the job.
"But I have confidence in the others as well that they can do the job."
Australia play China in a preliminary match on Thursday.
"They're big. Big long and athletic," Goriss said.
"They rebound really well. They'll be a challenge for us defensively as well. They'll run the ball.
"Our defensive transition tomorrow has to be good."
Meanwhile, the Australian girls' basketball team repeated the dose for the Kiwis with a resounding 50-point victory, 87-37.
Gretel Tippett and Lauren Nicholson led all scorers with 14 points apiece, with Tippett adding 10 rebounds.
"This age group is really talented and there is a lot of depth," said Australian head coach Nicole Ireland.
"We've got 12 players here but there were at least another 10 that we had at the camp that could have made this team as well, so we're really excited about it."
At the Sydney Olympic Park hockey centre, the women's under-18 hockey team smashed the United States 4-0.
The news wasn't as good for the boys' hockey side, Australia losing to India 2-1.
Held every two years, the AYOF sees 1,500 competitors from more than 25 nations competing in 17 events around Sydney.
The athletes, aged between 13-19, submit to drug testing and are be housed in the Olympic village.
