ABC receivers in contract error

January 7, 2009

Receivers for ABC Learning centres are scurrying to apologise over contracts sent to workers that compromised their job security and benefits.

The child care union had called for the withdrawal of new employment contracts that were given to transferred workers from the 55 ABC Learning centres that closed on New Year's Eve.

The contracts effectively re-started their employment, with workers having to serve three months' probation and the risk of dismissal at a moment's notice.

A spokesman for receiver McGrathNicol told AAP the new contracts were sent out by mistake from the ABC Learning head office in Brisbane.

''It was a system-generated letter from ABC headquarters,'' the spokesman said.

''We are not sure how many contracts went out as it was up to the individual centre director to send them out.

''We are sending out an apology.''

The promise still held that the workers who were set to transfer won't be required to undergo probation, he said.

Assistant national secretary for the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union (LHMU) Sue Lines had earlier told AAP the new contracts were an outrage and demanded their withdrawal.

Updated comment was being sought from the LHMU.
