BHP, ArcelorMittal talks on African assets fail

September 9, 2010

Mining giant BHP Billiton and the world’s largest steel maker, ArcelorMittal, have unsuccessfully ended talks to combine their assets in the West African nations of Liberia and Guinea.

‘‘The companies were unable to reach a commercial agreement,’’ BHP Billiton said in a statement.

‘‘BHP Billiton and ArcelorMittal will continue to advance their iron ore interests in West Africa independently.’’

Shares in BHP Billiton were up 17 cents at $38.08 in mid-afternoon trading.
