Closer Asia research ties urged

By Clancy Yeates

AUSTRALIAN businesses will be encouraged to develop closer research ties with Asia as part of the government's push to strengthen commercial linkages in the region.

The Treasurer, Wayne Swan, today will provide a clear signal on some likely recommendations from the Asian white paper being prepared by former Treasury boss Ken Henry.

In a speech in Hong Kong, Mr Swan will reveal that the white paper will include a focus on how to strengthen linkages between researchers here and in Asia.

''Stronger research links will be important in promoting a greater shared understanding of regional issues, and will help Australia and our neighbours plug into more regional opportunities,'' Mr Swan will say, according to speaking notes.

The white paper has been rumoured to include plans to increase the number of Australian students studying overseas, and Mr Swan will also stress the role of education in improving regional links.

''Education plays a big role in building this understanding, and will continue to be critical in equipping our workforce with the knowledge and skills they need to get ahead,'' he will say.

The focus on research is part of a broader government push to encourage Australian businesses to embrace the opportunities presented by Asia's rising middle class.

Mr Swan is also using his visit to encourage China to move closer to liberalising its currency by allowing trading nations to buy yuan directly.
