CSIRO to sell wool scouring plant in Vic

January 13, 2009

Australia's national science agency, CSIRO, is in the final stages of selling its small wool scouring line to a Victorian-based company.

Carpet manufacturer Velieris Pty Ltd will take over the Geelong scour.

Arrangements for scouring services during the takeover period will remain unchanged, the CSIRO says.

The scouring facilities were established specifically to meet the needs of a major research program into wool scouring between the 1970s and 1990s.

However, the demand for scouring wool has rapidly declined since then and the facility is now used for small scale commercial scouring of exotic fibres such as alpaca and mohair.

The facility's sale will ensure its continued by the wool industry, the CSIRO said.
