Jobs data show Australia outperforming other nations: Gillard

January 14, 2010

Jobs figures continue to show Australia is outperforming almost every other advanced economy, Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard says.

Figures reported by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on Thursday, showed the seasonally adjusted number of people with jobs in December was 35,200, or 0.3 per cent, higher than in November.

"Today's figures provide further evidence of how Australia has outperformed virtually every other adanced economy during the global recession," Ms Gillard told reporters in Melbourne on Thursday.

Ms Gillard said there were still 118,000 more Australians out of work than there were at the same time last year.

"That's why the government is determined to implement our gradual withdrawal of stimulus to support Australian jobs and businesses as the global recovery gradually flows through."
