Stimulus cash payment trimmed

The Federal Government has agreed to reduce cash payments to eligible taxpayers by $50 to $900 following negotiations with crossbench senators about its $42 billion economic package.

It will also reduce by the same amount, the one-off payment to single-income families.

"We do not reduce these payments lightly because we know they are essential to support growth and jobs in the near term," government frontbencher Senator Nick Sherry told parliament.

"But we have decided on this small reduction which maintains the overall effectiveness of the Government's plan ... while taking into account the views of others."

The Government is trying to have parliament approve a package of measures aimed at heading off a looming recession.
