The struggle to find work

By Chris Zappone

Sydney-based office administrator Jules Wright has been looking for full-time employment since July, when the maternity cover contract she was working on finished.

“I've been picking up some temping work through the agency but even that's only a couple days a week,” she said, adding that she sees no improvement in the job market from her perspective. It's forced her to dip into her savings which are almost depleted, she said.

“You sort have to keep yourself going,” she said. “It's one of those things where you end up thinking, 'If someone of my capabilities still can't get an interview, what's it like for the rest of the people?'”

Ms Wright has worked as an office administrator in management consultancy firms and business strategy in London, as well as coordinator and receptionist roles in Australia, she said.

“My agency is putting me forward for a five week reception role and I'm getting excited about that.”
