Lufthansa passenger, freight numbers fall

The leading German airline, Lufthansa, says that passenger numbers and the amount of freight carried in February fell further owing to the morose economic climate.

Lufthansa carried 3.78 million people, an annualised decline of 10.5%, a statement said.

The fall was steeper than January's drop of 9.3%.

Lufthansa's passenger load factor, the rate at which it filled seats, declined to 72.1% from more than 80% in September, despite efforts to reduce capacity.

Freight transport, which is particularly exposed to global economic slumps, shed almost 25% in February on a 12-month basis to 109,000 tonnes, the carrier said.

Lufthansa Cargo has cut capacity by 20% since the beginning of 2009 and announced partial unemployment measures to deal with the downturn.

The airline's subsidiary Swiss did somewhat better, limiting the number of passengers lost in the year to four per cent with a total of 901,000 carried last month.

Lufthansa is to release its 2008 results on Wednesday, under the threat of a possible strike.

The Ufo union which claims to represent around half of Lufthansa's flight crews voted on Monday in favour of such action to press demands for higher wages, but did not set any dates.
