AT 46 metres long, James Packer's motor yacht, Z Sydney, commands attention wherever it goes.

But under the current settings of Australia's defence radar system, it would not rate a mention.

The Jindalee Operational Radar Network is only ''expected'' to look for boats the size of the Armidale class patrol boat used by the Australian Navy which is 56 metres long and displaces 270 tonnes.

Mr Packer's super yacht, which has five bedrooms for up to 12 guests, four crew bedrooms and a large entertainment area, would technically not be detected by the country's biggest defence surveillance system.

Z Sydney, a Leopard 46 series yacht which is at present up for sale at $22 million, is capable of a top speed of 35 knots.

The agents appointed to sell the boat, now renamed Ares, spruik in their advertising material: ''These sports yachts have a striking presence on the water.'
