The world's most expensive dessert has been cooked up with an eye-watering price tag of £22,000 ($34,684).

Styled like a Faberge Easter egg, the extravagant chocolate pudding is believed to have broken all previous records thanks to its pricey list of ingredients which includes gold, champagne caviar and a two-carat diamond.

The pudding, which was layered with champagne jelly and a light biscuit joconde, was finished with bitter dark chocolate and glazed with edible gold leaf. It was created by Marc Guibert, head chef at Lindeth Howe Country House Hotel in Windermere, Cumbria.

In 2007 a New York City restaurateur came up with a $25,000 chocolate sundae, setting a Guinness world record.

Stephen Bruce, owner of Serendipity 3, partnered with a luxury jeweller to create the "Frrrozen Haute Chocolate," which was a blend of 28 cocoas from around the world.

The mixture of cocoas and milk are frozen to a slush and then garnished with La Madeline au Truffe. It is served up in a gold crowned goblet studded with diamonds.

Also in 2007, a Sri Lankan luxury resort created the Fortress Stilt Fisherman Indulgence which cost $US14,500 a serve.

The dessert features a fruit-infused gold leaf Italian cassata flavoured with Irish cream, a chocolate sculpture and an 80 carat aquamarine stone.
