Just when you thought every conceivable car idea must have been built, BMW says it has found yet another niche.

The Concept 5-Series Gran Turismo previews the first of the German maker's so-called Progressive Activity Sedans, which will go into production this year and reach Australia in early 2010.

BMW describes it as a "combination never seen before on any other car", fusing the characteristics of a luxury sedan, four-wheel-drive and Gran Turismo.

The GT, which debuts at next week's Geneva motor show, is aimed at customers "who attach great importance to genuine style, luxurious comfort and flexibility in use".

Although the car adopts the 5-Series name it's actually based on the new 7-Series just launched in Australia. At 4998 millimetres in length, the GT concept is 155 mm longer than a 5-Series wagon. It's also 64 mm taller, with a roofline that mimics the coupe-like profile of the X6. It has 21-inch alloys and the L-shaped, LED tail-lights mimic those on the 7-Series. The doors have frameless windows.

Inside, the concept's layout will make way for a five-seat cabin that's also based on the 7-Series. BMW claims rear legroom will be as generous as in the 7-Series and headroom as good as in the X5.

The rear-wheel-drive 5-Series GT's engine line-up can be expected to be similar to the 7-Series, with turbocharged six-cylinder petrol and diesels, as well as the twin-turbo V8. All are likely to be mated to a 6-speed automatic.

A 3-Series GT is also expected in the near future.
