Wardrobe memories

What are you hanging on to? What item of clothing can't you possibly let go of, despite your better judgement and your partner's nagging? Something held together by will, sweat and the collective memories that brought it this far.

Is it the U2 When Love Comes to Town 1989 tour T-shirt? I still have one of those. For guys it's so often a concert or band T-shirt. It's threadbare and torn, and of more use in the kitchen as a rag than as a T-shirt on your back. But wardrobes are built on history, love, and that includes musical tastes that have meandered and wandered over the years.

Maybe it's an old cap, whose repeated wearing has produced a layered salty trail from crown to brim, each layer like a ring on a tree signifying a new story or adventure.  It's a lucky cap now, it will only cease to be part of the wardrobe if it's lost or stolen, though the latter option is unlikely.

I love these kinds of things, decidedly unfashionable but laden with history and romance of a kind.  It probably seems so trivial now and to relay the story of its acquisition almost meaningless.  Except to you.

Recently I forced myself to get rid of a pair of socks I'd had for 10 years.  Once they were canary yellow. By the time I said goodbye to them they were more of a muted butter colour. They hadn't been worn in years but I hung on to them as a pleasant reminder of the time I arrived in London with no money, no job and in desperate need of socks.  So what do I do? I threw caution to the wind and bought one of the most expensive pairs of socks I could fine courtesy of Ralph Lauren.  I remember being so proud and then later being so hungry having just spent 15 pounds on a pair of socks when the exchange rate was 3 to 1.  Never mind that I could have bought five pair of socks from Marks and Spencer for the same price, I had to go to Ralph Lauren.  It was something pretty typical of me at the time, but I did love those socks.

I guess they were a mark in time for me, a badge of honour for having made it to that point, becoming in the process much more than a pair of socks.

I'm sure there are more ridiculous stories out there, tales of catching Mats Wilander's T-shirt and wearing it down to the point of regret.  Or symbols of another life that lie hidden from the current version of you.

What are some of your old wardrobe loves? What do you hang onto them? Is their history stronger now than when you first acquired them?

  • I have a hideously orange puma sleeveless t-shirt that is coming on 8 years old. It is very tired, tatty and some small bits of mold growing on the puma lettering on the front. I should get rid of it (especially with the mold), but I can't.

This is the t-shirt that I wore during training for my first boxing match and help clean up my blood between rounds in sparring and during one of my bouts. It holds a lot of fond memories and I can't really get rid of it until is disintegrates into thin air.

  • yeah, mine is a concert shirt: Ramones 1980 (saw them in Brisbane).

Its white lettering on black, and looks just like many of those you see about now, except MINE has '1980' printed under the band seal/logo, which makes ALL the difference (plus the lettering of the band name is a slightly different).

You can daylight see through it, its so threadbare -- hardly sees sun now actually, I just take it out every now and again when putting other stuff in my cupboard and feel nostalgic. Then I put it back.

But just having it there allows me to feel smug when I see all the new t-shirts that reduce the band name and seal to a fashion icon (much like the image of Che Guevara).

Some months ago I was in Indonesia working in a pretty remote spot, when I saw a local young woman with a Ramones t-shirt (there the word's pronounced 'Rah-Mon-Ez'). I couldn't help but ask her whether she knew what it referred to - unfair really.

She didn't. I told her it was a 'musical group'.

A week later she had downloaded some tracks to her mobile through a city-based friend with internet access, and showed me. Nice.

    Gabba gabba hey!

  • I have a pair of sox left at my place over 15 years ago by a friend. I had the hots for him - only problem was he was straight. I wore them every now and again up until recently, when they "died" - but I've still go them. It's a bit creepy, but the sox are a reminder of a liaison that didn't happen. He doesn't know about the socks or the crush.

  • My Triple J exploding head sweatshirt that my brother gave to me on my birthday, 29 years ago! I was not a listener at the time and I'm still not, but the exploding head is iconic and it was my 13th birthday and I had officially become a teenager....

  • I still have my Spandu Ballet T - Shirt which I purchased when they toured back in 1985. I very proudly got it out washed it and wore it to their recent concert in Sydney this April. The T Shirt was still in good condition after 25 years, a little thin (from waering it and washing it back in 1985) but I could still fit into it.

They were selling similiar T Shirts this time round but I preferred to stick with my 25 year old shirt!

  • Its not a rock band t-shirt but I'm having trouble getting rid of a pair of Church's shoes that I bought in London many years ago, they fit like a glove. I have a new pair of TM Lewins' Dunlop welted brogues in the cupboard but I can't force myself to swap my Church's them.
