Poll: Australia's most expensive table wine

Barossa Valley winery Torbreck has released a table wine priced in the vicinity of $700 to $730, surpassing even the price of the current-release Penfolds Grange (around $600). Is this too much to spend on a bottle of wine?

  • $700 odd for this wine seems excessive. For a wine to justify such a price it should have a track record. Grange and Ch Lafite have earnt theirs over many years. Only time will tell if this will be a classic or an over oaked alcoholic monster.

Also the idea of restaurants such as Icebergs selling it is almost laughable. Presumably the wine will be ready to drink in 10 to 20 years time. Putting such young wines on restaurant wine lists amounts to vinicide and does neither the restaurant or wine any credit.

  • Torbreck do make lovely wines but $700 is a bit over the top. I'd never spend $700 on a bottle of wine.

  • I'd love to hear from someone who has tried this wine. What was it like? Was it $700 well spent?

  • For a country that produces so much wine we dont really have a large number of super premium wines - I think this is a great concept and the publicity alone that it will generate for Torbreck is worth them attempting it.

  • Tried some at a wine-tasting on Tues night. Taste is a subjective thing, though. We tried a number of different Torbreck wines and I preferred the Struie Shiraz over the Gask Shiraz, though the Struie was cheaper.

We all agreed the Laird, though, if you can afford it and you love wine, yes, it's worth it. It was very special (my husband's eyes were rolling back in his head with delight). Our friends bought a bottle but it needs to be laid down for 12 years. That sort of thing is an investment, like the Grange. It's the sort of bottle you bring out at a celebration, or give as a special gift.

  • I couldn't justify spending that much on a bottle of wine that I intend to drink with a meal and we drink 2 or 3 bottles every week. There are lots of very acceptable to good red wines in the $15 to 30 range and almost too many good wines in the $30 to 80 range. I have a hard enough time justifying spending more than $30 or $40 on a bottle and no way I could justify spending $700.
Maybe my palate isn't refined enough but this spring, we had a 1990 Grange that our club had purchased for about $200 when it was released and I didn't find it outstanding.
There are always some people who buy expensive goods to show that they can and to impress others so I guess someone will buy this wine.

  • I agree with @nigel, wine w--kers will probably fall over themselves to get some but let's face it, it is just the product of rotted grapes and it's only other appearance after passing the tongue will be as it goes down the porcelain. There are some excellent wines available for less than $50, paying $700 or more is only for those with more money than sense.

  • For $700 you can support a child for a year via Unicef and have enough over for several bottles of really good wine.
